Franklin Method is
essentially
about using imagery and movement to help us get a better awareness of
our own
bodies so that we can have better posture, better movement quality and
better
health. In Franklin Method we use all the different kinds of imagery
creatively
to begin to be aware of where our bodies are now so that we can begin
to
change.
Understanding
and
Feeling—Into Movement
In the
Franklin Method
we use imagery to bring awareness to our bodies. If we can feel our
bodies or a
part thereof we can start to change them. “Imagine
the muscles of your neck and shoulders as a cascade of water flowing
down into
your arms”
We have brought awareness to the muscles and asked them to flow like
water—what
happens? Hey presto!—the muscles start
to relax.
It is often useful to have a little understanding of the function and evolution of different parts of the body. When we consider these facts we start to understand why the body parts are shaped as they are. Just thinking about some of these shapes and their interactions can be a rich source of imagery and a great way to tune into the feelings in the body. This is “experiential anatomy” - a key concept in Franklin Method work. Experiential anatomy is not learning loads of dry anatomical names (yikes!!!) but is rather finding the shape and function of our own anatomy so that we can embody our design. When we embody our design better we start to experience greater ease of movement, greater body efficiency and ultimately better health.
For our bodies to be healthy they must move. In Franklin Method we try to use functional everyday movements to illustrate how the body can be. We also use some specific gentle exercise to help the body to repattern.
